Wilson’s second stage and the 1:2:2 score
For Wilson’s 2027 entry, the combined weighting is SET : second-stage English : second-stage maths = 1:2:2. Candidates must pass each second-stage paper and the overall standard. The ratio is not a formula for converting a home practice percentage into an offer.

Worked example Compare the contributions
Original teaching example. In a simplified illustration with comparable component scores, which contributes more: the SET component or one second-stage subject?
Why this works: The SET contributes one fifth; each second-stage subject contributes two fifths. Together they account for five fifths.
Why the tempting route fails: That weighting does not remove the separate requirement to pass each second-stage paper. A strong total cannot be assumed to compensate for a failed component.

- If written English is weaker, practise an explanation with evidence and revise it.
- If maths is weaker, review the first incorrect step before starting a fresh problem.
- Keep SET outcome, second-stage qualification and a place offer as separate events.
- Check the school’s academic conditions for any aptitude route; do not treat aptitude as an exemption.
