How the range is worked out

  1. Each question has a difficulty level from our SET question bank. A middle-level question is one an average child sitting the SET gets right about two times in three.
  2. In each paper we find the ability that best explains how many your child got right, allowing for how hard those questions were.
  3. SET scores are standardised for age: the children who sit it average 100 in each paper, with most between 85 and 115. We place your child's ability on that scale and show where it sits among the children who sit it.
  4. Each Sutton grammar school sets its own second-stage rule, so each paper stands alone. With six to nine questions a paper the range is wide; a full timed mock narrows it.

Questions

Is this an official SET paper?

No. The questions are our own, written to the SET's English and maths format, and each one was solved independently by two solvers. The Sutton schools publish sample papers.

How accurate is the score?

It is a range, because 15 questions cannot pin down one score. About two times in three your child's level sits inside it. A full timed SET mock narrows it a lot.

How long does it take?

16 minutes: English 7 and maths 9. Each real SET paper is about 40 questions in 40 to 50 minutes.

Do we need an account?

No. The marks and the likely scores show straight away. A free account adds the topics to fix first, a two-week plan and every answer explained, and keeps them.

What happens after the SET?

Children who reach the qualifying level sit the second stage for the schools they chose. Each school then combines the standardised SET score with its own second-stage papers in its own way; Wallington County, for example, counts the SET as two fifths.
